Black History Month highlights the important history of the pivotal role Windsor Essex played in the Underground Railroad Movement. We encourage you to take the time this month, and throughout the year, to explore the historic landmarks and educational sites that showcase the journey undertaken by those searching for freedom.

Below we highlight a selection of businesses, events and heritage sites celebrating Black History Month:

Amherstburg Freedom Museum

View exhibits and artifacts that share the stories of African Canadians, their journey to freedom and their contribution to society. A wide array of Black History Month events will take place throughout the month. Check the calendar and reserve tickets ahead of time to not miss out! Tours of the museum must be booked in advance.

River Book Shop

The bookshop has joined with local partners for their Celebration of Black History Month. Events include speakers and presentations, guest readers and authors and showcasing art from the Amherstburg Freedom Museum Collection. Check the Calendar of Events for details.

Art Windsor Essex

On display through February 19th, The Artists of Colour: Abstracted Realities showcase works of many eminent Black artists that are recognized as historically significant contributors. The artists in this exhibit are narratives of The Artists of Colour.

Black Owned Businesses

There are many Black Owned Businesses throughout Windsor Essex to frequent: Afrik Empire located in Devonshire Mall is offering 20% off all sales for Black History Month. 7 By Raz located in Tecumseh Mall features one of a kind fair trade items and is also offering sales throughout the month. Suya Grille creates delicious afro-cajun fusion cuisine with takeout and catering options. Pure Vibez Nutrition in Belle River is whipping up healthy smoothies and energy teas and making the world happier and healthier as they go!
