Before You Head Out and Fish

You can buy your fishing license onlineย and save it in a digital format (for example, on your smartphone), print it from home, or print it through aย participating ServiceOntarioย orย license issuerย location.

Two types of fishing licenses are available:

  1. Sport fishing license, which includes full catch-and-possession fishing privileges
  2. Conservation fishing license, which includes reduced catch-and-possession limits. This is ideal for anglers who want to release the majority of fish they catch.

Fishing licenses are available for different durations, including: one day, eight days, one year, three years

Free Family Fishing

Four times a year, Canadian residents can fish in Ontario for free. This means you do not need to buy a fishing licence if you want to fish during:

  • Motherโ€™s Day Weekend (May 11โ€“12, 2024)
  • Fatherโ€™s Day Weekend (June 15โ€“16, 2024)
  • Family Fishing Week (June 29โ€“July 7, 2024)

You must still follow fishing and conservation regulations during Free Family Fishing dates. More information can be found here.
