Before You Head Out and Fish
You can buy your fishing license online and save it in a digital format (for example, on your smartphone), print it from home, or print it through a participating ServiceOntario or license issuer location.
Two types of fishing licenses are available:
- Sport fishing license, which includes full catch-and-possession fishing privileges
- Conservation fishing license, which includes reduced catch-and-possession limits. This is ideal for anglers who want to release the majority of fish they catch.
Fishing licenses are available for different durations, including: one day, eight days, one year, three years
Free Family Fishing
Four times a year, Canadian residents can fish in Ontario for free. This means you do not need to buy a fishing license if you want to fish during:
- Family Fishing Weekend
- Mother’s Day Weekend
- Father’s Day Weekend
- Family Fishing Week
You must still follow fishing and conservation regulations during Free Family Fishing dates. More information can be found here.
