What a Wonderful WIFF
10 Reasons to Fall in Love With The Windsor International Film Festival
What a wonderful world. What a wonderful WIFF.
Every fall, something pretty special happens in Downtown Windsor. For 11 days, the world of film takes over the city as the Windsor International Film Festival (WIFF) brings incredible stories, filmmakers and movie lovers together from near and far.
Running Thursday October 29th through Sunday November 8th, this year’s festival features 232 feature films, more than 300 screenings, films from 55 countries, 75 feature documentaries, 53 local films and 59 Francophone films across four downtown venues. And with 51% of the feature lineup being Canadian — the largest share in WIFF history — there is plenty to celebrate right here at home.
So grab your popcorn and settle in. Here are 10 reasons to fall in love with WIFF.

1. The World Comes to Windsor
You don’t need a passport to see the world during WIFF.
With films representing 55 countries, the festival is an opportunity to experience different cultures, perspectives, languages and stories — all from right here in Windsor.
One screening might take you somewhere you’ve always dreamed of visiting. Another might introduce you to a place you’ve never heard of. And another might offer a glimpse into a life completely different from your own.
That’s the magic of film: you can travel without ever leaving your seat.

2. Canadian Stories Take Centre Stage
WIFF isn’t just bringing the world to Windsor — it’s also shining a spotlight on stories made right here in Canada.
In 2026, 51% of WIFF’s feature lineup is Canadian, representing the largest share of Canadian films in the festival’s history.
It’s a fantastic opportunity to discover Canadian filmmakers, actors, storytellers and subjects — and perhaps find a new favourite film made a little closer to home.
Because sometimes the stories that surprise us most are the ones happening in our own backyard.

3. Windsor Essex Has Stories to Tell, Too
Speaking of home, don’t overlook WIFF Local.
With 53 local films featured in this year’s festival, WIFF gives audiences the opportunity to see the talent and stories coming out of our region.
From emerging filmmakers to stories rooted in our community, local screenings are a reminder that you don’t have to travel far to find creativity, compelling characters and stories worth sharing.
Show your local love with a stop at a locally owned cafe, cocktail bar, restaurant or shop — all located within steps of the four WIFF venues.

4. There’s Always Something New to Discover
With 232 feature films and more than 300 screenings, there is a lot to choose from.
And that’s exactly what makes WIFF so much fun.
You can come with a carefully curated list of must-see films — or you can throw caution to the wind and choose something you’ve never heard of.
Try a genre you normally wouldn’t watch. Pick a film based on its title. See a documentary when you normally stick to features.
You might walk into the theatre expecting one thing and walk out having discovered your new favourite movie.
That’s a pretty wonderful way to spend a day. Even more wonderful? Challenge yourself to see, do or try something new to you while your visiting Downtown Windsor. Search out an art piece with the Eyes on Art Digital Pass. Try a new restaurant. Visit a new cafe.

5. See Movies You Might Not Find Anywhere Else
WIFF’s lineup goes far beyond the usual multiplex offerings, with international films, documentaries, Canadian productions, local stories and films from a wide variety of genres and perspectives.
And because there are screenings happening throughout the day, you can build your experience around exactly what interests you.
Whether you’re a serious cinephile or someone who simply loves a great story, there’s something waiting for you.

6. Every Film Gives You Something to Talk About
One of the best things about seeing a movie at WIFF is what happens after the credits roll.
Was it your favourite? Did you love the ending? Did you completely disagree with your friend about it? Did it make you laugh, cry, think or see something differently?
Film has a way of starting conversations — and WIFF gives you plenty of opportunities to have them. Talk about what you watched over dinner and a nearby restaurant. Debate your favourite films with friends. Compare notes with fellow festival-goers. Sometimes the conversation is almost as good as the movie.

7. You Might Find a New Favourite
Ask any longtime film festival fan and they’ll probably tell you about that movie. The one they knew nothing about before walking into the theatre. The one they almost skipped. The one they recommended to everyone afterward.
That’s one of the wonderful things about WIFF: you never quite know what you’re going to discover. So while it’s great to have a list of films you absolutely want to see, leave a little room for the unexpected. Your next favourite film might be waiting for you.

8. Downtown Windsor Becomes Part of the Experience
WIFF isn’t confined to one theatre.
The 2026 festival takes place across four venues: Chrysler Theatre, the Capitol Theatre’s Pentastar and Kelly Stages, and the University of Windsor Armouries.
That means WIFF becomes part of the fabric of Downtown Windsor for 11 days.
Grab a coffee before a morning screening. Meet friends for dinner between films. Take a walk downtown. Discover a new restaurant or shop. Catch another movie.

9. The Festival Doesn’t End When the Credits Roll
WIFF has become part of Windsor’s cultural landscape, and you can see that connection throughout downtown.

10. It’s More Than a Film Festival
Maybe the best reason of all to WIFF is that it brings people together.
It brings together filmmakers and audiences. Local stories and international perspectives. Friends, families, visitors and longtime festival fans. It’s a celebration of film, creativity, culture, community and the simple joy of discovering a great story.
And with 11 days of films and more than 300 screenings, there’s plenty of opportunity to find your own wonderful WIFF experience.
