7 Ways To Save The Planet In YQG

Original blog by Tourism Windsor Essex

Earth Day arrives each year on April 22nd as a way for communities, businesses and individuals to show support for environmental protection. One of the ways we can work toward improving our local environment is by supporting sustainable practices and initiatives. Keep reading for 7 Ways To Save The Planet here in YQG!

1. Reduce, Reuse, Recycle

Devonshire Mall practices what they preach with their sustainability program allowing them to be an environmental leader within the community. Food Court Sorting Stations streamline and eliminate landfill waste. They’ve also introduced an organics program where all food waste is being composted in their on-site compost facility. You’ll also find a water bottle refill station, eBike solar charging station and a solar charging bench. This Earth Day Devonshire Mall hosts their 15th Annual Recycling Day: drop off your recyclable items at the Southeast parking lot near Cineplex from 9am to 5pm. It’s the perfect opportunity to do some spring cleaning! Recycle your clothing, bicycles, microwaves, old medication and more!

2. Green Transportation

Windsor Essex is a cyclists dream, with miles of trails to explore and enjoy! Give the car a rest this Earth Day and use our Cycle Tourism Map to plan your next two-wheeled adventure. Another two-wheeled option to get around are Bird Canada Scooters, scoot around Downtown Windsor and the Riverfront Trail whether you’re heading to work, class or just need a breath of fresh air. Maybe you’d like to explore Essex County up close with The Grove Bike Co. electric and old-fashioned bike rentals. Stop at EPIC Wineries, explore the parks and trails of Lake Erie or use it to get around to the shops of Kingsville.

3. Sustainable Wineries

Speaking of EPIC Wineries, we are home to several sustainability-award-winning wineries:

Cooper’s Hawk Vineyards focuses on high quality affordable wines grown on an environmentally supportive site.

In 2022, both Oxley Estate Winery and its vineyards were certified through the Wine Country Ontario and Grapes Growers of Ontario Sustainable Wine Programs.

Pelee Island Winery prides themselves on consistently producing exceptional wines in an ecologically conscious manner that will exceed your expectations. By having control of their grape supply it allows them to grow and care for each and every vine to specifications strictly outlined by the World Wildlife Fund’s strict Sustainable Vineyard Practice.
