Catch of the Day: Nina’s Beginner Guide to a Fishing Adventure

Original blog by Nina Ngo

Hey besties! It’s your local guide and adventure buddy, Nina. Fishing is one of those timeless activities that lets you disconnect, live in the moment, and soak in Ontario’s great outdoors. Whether you’re with friends, family, or just looking for some peaceful time by the water, Windsor Essex is the perfect place to cast your first line.

We’re lucky to live on a peninsula surrounded by three incredible bodies of water – Lake Erie, Lake St. Clair, and the Detroit River – making this region a fishing enthusiast’s dream. From scenic shorelines to beautiful marinas, there’s no shortage of hidden gems to discover.

So, if you’re new to fishing, don’t worry! I’ve put together this beginner-friendly guide to help you get started – from licenses to where to buy gear, go-to-spots, and local flavours to round up your fishing adventure.

Step 1: Get Your Outdoors Card & Fishing License

Before you head out to the waters, you’ll need two essentials. You’ll first need an Outdoors Card which is a wallet-sized identification card that allows you to go fishing. It costs $8.57 + HST and can be purchased at the following places:

–        Online at huntandfishontario.com

–        By phone 1-800-288-1155

–        In person Service Ontario, Windsor City Hall, 400 City Hall Square East, Unit 205

Reminder that it is valid for 3 years, then you will need to renew it if you continue to fish. Next, you can purchase your Fishing License, which can be done at the same time you purchase your Outdoors Card. Prices vary depending on how long you want to fish for, whether that’s for 1 day, 1 year, or 3 years. There are also two different types of licenses: Sport involves full catch and possession privileges in comparison to the Conservation License, where there are reduced limits and perfect if you plan to release your catches.

Pro tip: Your Outdoors Card will arrive in the mail (within 20 days), but you can use a digital/printed license summary as temporary proof, meaning you can fish before receiving your card.

Step 2: Gear Up – Local Bait & Tackle | @lscprotackle

Fishing doesn’t need to be complicated or expensive- so, let’s start with the basics:

Click here for a list of essential items to bring when fishing.

I highly recommend going to LSC Pro Tackle Shop, a family-run business by a husband-and-wife duo. Fun fact: LSC stands for Lake St. Clair! This shop has quickly become the go-to spot for all your fishing needs. They’re experts who will guide you based on your budget and what you’re looking to gain from your ultimate fishing experience. This can range from a beginner to an advanced setup and can be as affordable as $100-$150 for different types of fishing equipment. This ensures you get the best individualized experience for your first time or your millionth time. This store is stocked with bait (worms, minnows), accessories, tools, and never-ending storage. They also carry local products such as Buck Fishes and their own merch line (my personal favourite is their pink hat!). Their favourite fishing spots include the Sculpture Gardens and the Peace Fountain from the season of March-May.

Free Fishing Opportunities

Canadian residents can fish license-free during the following times:

–        February: Family Fishing Weekend

–        May: Mother’s Day Weekend

–        June: Father’s Day Weekend

–        July (Canada Day Week): Family Fishing Week

Step 3: Fishing Hot Spots

From shorelines to marinas, Windsor Essex is full of accessible fishing spots:

–        Detroit River: muskie, walleye, bass, steelhead, and yellow perch can be found here. Fisher-friendly parks and piers make this great for beginners. A few fan favourites include Sculpture Gardens and the Peace Fountain.

–        Lake Erie: Known as the Walleye Capital of the WORLD! Also, home to the yellow perch and rainbow trout. After fishing, stop at Taylor Fish Company for lake-to-plate eats.

–        Lake St. Clair: Pike, smallmouth bass, catfish, carp, crappie, panfish, and sunfish- so many varieties of fishes can be found here. Bonus if you can spot a small lighthouse by Belle River Marina here, where many enjoy the sea– especially me, I enjoy watching the sunrise as it’s a peaceful way to start your morning while fishing.

If you’re planning to launch a boat, click here to check out the local marinas and boat launches.

If you want to get the full ultimate fishing experience – which I highly recommend – is taking a guided fishing charter. It’s a great way to learn new skills and gain confidence from local experts. Fishing Charters provide everything you need (i.e., boat, rods, reels, bait, etc.) and insider knowledge of local fishing grounds. They’re perfect for beginners or anyone looking to try recreational fishing at a higher level.

Here are some local charters to check out:

–        The Butcher Buoy Fishing Charters

–        Drifter II Charters

–        Greenhead Fishing Charters

–        Prime Time Sports Fishing Charters

–        Trophy Takers Fishing Charters

–        Can-Am Charters

–        Fish LSC Charters

–        Northside Sportfishing Charters

–        Jon’s Guide Service

–        Reel Deal Guide Service

–        Simpers Fishing Charters

Step 4: From Lake to Plate | @taylorfishcompany

Taylor Fish Company is a true hidden gem that you need to explore as soon as possible. I can guarantee you that this spot has the best fish and chips you’ll ever taste! Located in the heart of Wheatley, at 419 Erie Street South, this family-run business is known for their fresh local catches of Walleye, Yellow and White Perch. Their chip truck only uses the freshest ingredients and is open from May to October, from Thursdays to Sundays only. I highly recommend sharing an order of the 6-piece Yellow Perch Dinner for only $30 which includes krinkle cut fries, coleslaw, and a sweet roll. If you’re feeling hungry after, try the Breaded Butterfly Shrimp with a side of tartar sauce– Chef’s kiss! Don’t forget, this establishment accepts cash only! You’re also in luck – all the fish they catch, you can purchase at their retail store throughout the week.

 Tips for Your First Cast

–        Take a photo to capture your first catch!

–        Celebrate all catches, big or small.

–        Dress for the weather (hat, layers, sunscreen).

–        Enjoy fishing during the sunrise or sunset.

–        Check out the Tourism Windsor Essex Pelee Island Fishing Guide to get the ultimate fishing experience.

Final Thoughts

Fishing is more than just a sport – it’s about slowing down, enjoying nature, and creating memories along the water. With Windsor Essex’s abundance of lakes, rivers, and local support, there’s no better place to cast your very first line as well as explore hidden gems. It’s also one of those sports that help you foster an appreciation for nature and conservation. Regardless of experience or financial situation, fishing in Windsor Essex is very accessible for all and there are plenty of opportunities to learn for the first time and become an avid fisher! Whether you’re renting a rod, heading out on a charter, or finding your new favourite shoreline spot, I hope this guide inspires you to try fishing! See you on the next adventure!
