Korda Productions Presents RHINOCEROS

The sublime is confused with the ridiculous in this savage commentary on the human condition, a staple of 20th century drama. RHINOCEROS is a landmark 1959 absurdist play by French-Romanian playwright Eugène Ionesco. It explores mass hysteria, conformity, and totalitarianism through a French town where citizens inexplicably transform into rhinoceroses. The protagonist, Bérenger, is the last human remaining, desperately struggling to hold onto his identity as everyone around him joins the herd.

Widely interpreted as a reaction to the rise of Nazism in Europe, the play critiques how easily ordinary people can adopt dangerous, mob-like ideologies. The transformations are contagious. As citizens become rhinoceroses, they justify it by claiming they must “move with the times.”
