Canadian Bacon director Michael Moore is known for his controversial films, and this is no different. A satire of Canada—USA relations, the film stars Canadian John Candy in his last role before his death in 1994. The film tells the story of a struggling President who is persuaded by his confidants to fight with Canada when a local sheriff and his friends get involved.
Times: 11am, Sat March 29th
You Are Here: A Come From Away Story showcases the iconic and heartwarming story of one small Canadian town stepping up to help a nation that has experienced tragedy. The film profiles some of the real people who were portrayed in the 2013 stage musical Come from Away.
Times: 1pm, Fri March 28th
Argo, Ben Affleck’s Oscar-winning film from 2013, shares the story of the “Canadian Caper” of how US diplomats were rescued from Iran, much due to the involvement of the Canadian Embassy and Ambassador Ken Taylor.
Times: 5:15pm, Sat March 29th
A favourite documentary from the 2024 Festival, The Best of the Best: Jazz from Detroit, showcases the history and breadth of jazz and jazz musicians from the Motor City. Based on the award-winning book by Mark Stryker, the film reminds audiences that Detroit remains a mecca of Black musical excellence and that jazz is central to the soundtrack of the city’s renaissance. The special cultural kinship between Detroit and Windsor is undeniable.
Times: 7:45pm, Sat March 29th
First seen by our audience at the WIFF 2024 Opening Night, Shepherds directed by Sophie Deraspe, this deeply satisfying film won win TIFF’s Best Canadian Film Award. The film follows a young man as he abandons the life he knows in Montreal – corporate job security, city living—for that of a shepherd in the South of France. The film reminds us of Canada’s unshakeable Francophone roots.
