AWE at Night (August 2024)

Save the date! Join Art Windsor-Essex on August 15th for AWE at Night. Art Windsor-Essex is open late for an evening of art activities, community conversations, guided tours, and good vibes.

Studio Activity: Sound Studio with Mani and Sanaz Mazinani  ⎮ 5pm – 9pm, 2nd floor Education Studio  

Join artists Mani and Sanaz Mazinani in the studio to explore Sound! Make, record, and listen to the sounds around you.

Pride and Joy: Collage Activity ⎮ 5pm – 9pm, 3rd floor, Solcz Family Suite 

To celebrate Windsor Pride, AWE is partnering with Trans Wellness Ontario to showcase artworks made by local 2S-LGBTQIA+ community members and allies. This community display is a heartfelt celebration of creativity, strength, and unity. This community display is presented by Art Windsor-Essex in partnership with Trans Wellness Ontario. Join us in the Solcz Family Suite for a Pride collage activity!

Performance: Dialogue no. 8 by Janzen+Broeders⎮ 4pm – 6pm, 2nd floor galleries 

The performances and installation of Dialogue no. 8 respond to over 500 ‘letters of love’ submitted by participants. The artists directly engage with these texts through rhythmic, interactive performances that transform and expand the gallery space throughout the duration of this exhibit. The performances follow 3 rules: 1) Perform letters of love submissions, 2) Connect with the textures of the space, and 3) Embody the sense of touch.

Artist Talk: Ed Janzen and Collette Broeders ⎮ 6pm – 6:30pm, 2nd floor galleries 

Ed Janzen and Collette Broeders have been collaborating since 2020. Their work consists of performative large-scale drawings and video installations expressed through mark-making and rhythmic movement. Written text, surroundings of place, and tactile sensory experience influence their work. Their individual practices share an interest in mark-making, walking, and the use of text.

Artist Talk: Joi Arcand with Julie Rae Tucker ⎮ 7pm – 7:30pm, 2nd floor galleries 

Joi T. Arcand’s work tell a story of identity, childhood dreams, and intergenerational love. They invite viewers to reflect on their own aspirations and the complexities of navigating multiple dreams and identities. Through colour, texture, and script, the artist honours her personal history while inviting viewers to contemplate the intersections of Indigenous girlhood, ambition, and self-discovery.

Activating the Commons: Animating City Infrastructure through the Arts⎮ 5:30pm – 7pm, front lawn, outside

Come join us at Art Windsor-Essex for an exciting event focused on community engagement through public art! Ilana Altman, Co-Executive Director of The Bentway, joins local policy makers and advocates for an engaging evening on the lawn at Art Windsor-Essex to discuss the ways public infrastructure can be activated through art and community engagement.

Speakers: 

• Renaldo Agostino, Windsor Ward 3 Councillor, is a longtime promotor and community advocate
• Lauren Hedges, Managing Director of Windsor Hackforge, is a professional project manager and photographer
• Jennifer Matotek, Executive Director of Art Windsor-Essex, is an administrator, curator, and artist
• Dorian Moore, architect and urban planner, teaches urbanism and architecture in Canada and the United States
• Pat Papadeas, Director of the Windsor International Film Festival, is Director of Academic Operations at St. Clair College
