Five Ways to commemorate The Long Weekend

The word triumph suggests victory, and brighter days ahead, and is often used in the context of overcoming adversity. The title for this year’s Canada Day theme was selected and appropriate given the difficult year we have collectively faced due to the pandemic and most recently the discovery of thousands of unmarked graves of children who were sent to residential schools and never returned. The fireworks display will include an Indigenous cultural segment to honour these precious lives.

Now remains a time to reflect and honour on communities that are struggling. As we continue to tell the truth about this part of our history, we also acknowledge that our region sits on the traditional territory of the Anishnaabeg people of the Three Fires Confederacy: Ojibwe, Potawatomi, and Odawa. Today, and every day, we must continue to be grateful and to nurture and respect our relationship with Indigenous peoples in the places we continue to call ‘home’. You can learn more about the indigenous history in our region by clicking here.

While Canada Day 2021 may not be exactly the same celebration we are used to from past years BUT there are some great ways to spend the holiday here in Windsor Essex.  We’ve come up with a list of a few ways to celebrate but make sure to check back to see what each municipality across Windsor Essex Pelee Island has in store.
